Susan Dowell, LCSW; Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Board Certified Diplomate

Susan Dowell has been a clinical social work psychotherapist for over 35 years. She received her MSW from Boston University School of Social Work and a Masters Degree in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University.

Along with her general psychodynamic training, Susan has received advanced training in Clinical Hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, EMDR, and has also been trained in Marriage and Family Counseling and in Psychodrama. She is the founder and developer of Footprintings, a dynamic new treatment approach that provides effective and easy to use tools for identifying, observing, experiencing and repairing the relational perspective between Ego States. A creative and innovative therapist, Susan draws from these varying approaches as a foundation for developing individualized treatment for each client with whom she works. Susan is an Approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis for ASCH (American Society of Clinical Hypnosis). As Co-Director and Co-Founder of CATCH (Center for Advancement of Training in Clinical Hypnosis) Susan trains health and mental health professionals in the practice of clinical hypnosis. She presently has a private practice in New York City and in New Rochelle, New York. She has taught psychology at New York University and Montclair State College and has lectured and presented workshops both nationally and internationally.

Susan is committed to assuring sound clinical hypnosis training and because of this she has served on the Board of Directors of ASCH (American Society of Clinical Hypnosis) and an active member of the Education Committee of ASCH as well. She also was the co-chair of the Hypnosis Practice Committee of the New York State Society of Clinical Social Workers. Susan has written professional articles, appeared on TV, and is currently in the process of writing a book about hypnotic approaches to clinical work.

Before starting her clinical practice, she worked at Hull House in Chicago as a Community Organizer for three years and then as a Clinical Social Worker for seven years at Bellevue Hospital Psychiatric Hospital in New York City where she worked in an outpatient treatment program and helped develop one of the first Methadone Treatment Programs in New York. She believes in a mind and body approach to clinical treatment and sees patients and families in consultation and therapy for a wide range of different concerns. She also works adjunctively using Hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing, Footprintings and Brainspotting with patients who are in therapy with other psychotherapists.

Susan is well respected as a consultant and supervisor to other clinicians. She enjoys teaching and supervising and finds that it deepens her clinical skills and perspective. For further information about this please visit the Professionals page in this website.
